Network Synchronization
What is a Clock Synchronizer?
Clock Synchronizers are critical elements of systems that comprise the world’s Communications Infrastructure, including base stations, radio network controllers, wireless backhaul equipment, routers, gateways, PONs (Passive Optical Networks), DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer), multi-service switching platform, and transmission equipment. They generate outputs which are phase, frequency, and time synchronized to references provided. Phase synchronization is achieved by ensuring the rising edges of the outputs are consistent with the rising edges of the reference input clock. Frequency synchronization is achieved by ensuring that the frequency of the output is ratiometrically consistent to the frequency of the input. Time Synchronization ensures that there is an accompanying signal for the output which identifies the time of day when the data (that is being transmitted alongside the clock) was first received.
How to choose a Clock Synchronizer:
Renesas' synchronization solutions leverage multiple technologies, including digital clock synthesizers and analog PLLs, sometimes in a single chip. The digital synthesizers ensure compliance to standards and perform clock monitoring, hitless reference switching and wander filtering; the analog PLLs translate frequencies and deliver low jitter clocks. The ClockMatrix series of devices is the best place to start looking for synchronization solutions. If you are interested in more basic functions, Zero Delay Buffers may also warrant consideration.
Spread-Spectrum Clocks
What is Spread Spectrum Clocking?
Spread spectrum clocking is a technique where the clock frequency is modulated slightly to lower the peak energy generated by a clock. Spread spectrum clocking lowers clock-generated EMI from both the fundamental frequency and subsequent harmonics, thereby reducing the total system EMI. Spread spectrum clock generator (SSCG) products support two different types of spread spectrum clocking: down spread and center spread. Down spread spectrum clocking modulates below the nominal clock frequency while center spread spectrum clocking modulates evenly above and below the nominal clock frequency. The type of spread spectrum clocking used depends on the specifications of the clock destination. Some destination chipsets, CPUs, etc., have a maximum clock frequency specification that cannot be violated. In these cases, down spread spectrum clocking should be applied.
How to choose the best Spread Spectrum Clock for your needs:
Renesas has a proprietary mix of analog and digital phase-locked loop (PLL) technologies comprising an extensive portfolio of flexible spread spectrum clock generator (SSCG) products. The Renesas spread spectrum clock generator portfolio has products supporting crystal or clock reference inputs. For systems requiring spread spectrum clock injection on clock reference inputs, Renesas' high-performance PLL technology maintains good phase noise and high performance while reducing EMI. By using Renesas’ spread spectrum clock technology, customers maintain high performance while saving cost and design time on expensive shielding, chokes and ferrite beads.
Automotive Timing
Renesas combines its experience in the automotive market with its expertise in timing to help fuel technology advances in electronics for automotive electronic systems. The Renesas VersaClock® automotive clock generators are PLL-based products that generate one or more clock signals for applications including, but not limited to, infotainment, dashboard, driver assist, Heads-Up Displays, and ADAS.
Fractional output divider technology allows generation of any combination of output frequencies, even those with no simple integer relationship. Clocks can be single-ended or differential, and support the latest in both PCI-Express and USB. One-time programmable (OTP) ROM is built-in, enabling customers to define a single device to power up as needed for multiple use cases.
The generation of dot clocks to drive LCD panels for infotainment or dashboard applications is an example use case where VersaClock devices are an appealing option as a replacement for crystal oscillators. Thanks to the highly configurable nature of VersaClock clock generators, a single PCB and BOM can be used regardless of the required dot clock frequency, alleviating the need to qualify different platforms when frequency needs change.
