The ADBMS6830MWCSWZ is a multi-cell battery pack monitor capable of measuring up to 16 battery cells in series, with a total measurement error (TME) of less than 2 mV over the full temperature range. The ADBMS6830’s measurement input range is −2 V to +5.5 V, suitable for most battery chemistry applications, and it can measure bus voltage. Provision is made to bypass the bus without designating any measurement channel.

 

Two separate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) can be used to measure all cells simultaneously and redundantly. Continuous-running ADCs with a high sampling rate of 4.096 MHz reduce the need for external analog filtering and provide aliasing-free measurements. A subsequent programmable infinite impulse response (IIR) filter enables further noise reduction.

 

Multiple ADBMS6830MWCSWZ devices can be daisy-chained to simultaneously monitor longer strings of high-voltage battery packs. Each ADBMS6830 features an isolated serial port interface (isoSPI™) for long-distance, high-speed communication free from RF interference. Multiple devices connect to the host processor in a daisy-chain configuration. This daisy-chain operates bidirectionally, ensuring communication integrity even if a communication path fails.

 

The ADBMS6830MWCSWZ can be powered by the battery pack or by an isolated power supply. The ADBMS6830 features passive balancing with independent pulse-width modulation (PWM) duty cycle control and a discharge current of up to 300 mA per cell. Other features include an on-board 5 V regulator, up to 10 general-purpose inputs/outputs, and a sleep mode that reduces current consumption to 4 μA.
