Mingjiada Supply/Recycle ST LIS2DW12 High Performance 3-Axis Linear Accelerometer
LIS2DW12: ST’s ultra-low-power three-axis accelerometer, providing the core driving force for drone attitude sensing and flight time optimisation
As drone (UAV) design continues to evolve towards miniaturisation, extended flight times and high reliability, every milliampere of current consumption and every milligram of noise can be a key factor in determining a product’s competitiveness. STMicroelectronics’ LIS2DW12 three-axis linear accelerometer, with its ultra-low power consumption, high performance and rich embedded features, is emerging as the ideal choice for UAV flight control and attitude sensing systems.
The LIS2DW12 belongs to ST’s ‘femto’ ultra-low power series and utilises a proven MEMS manufacturing process. Key specifications are detailed below:

LIS2DW12 Key Features: The Performance Foundation Tailored for Drones
Extremely low power consumption for extended flight time: The LIS2DW12 consumes just 50 nA in power-saving mode and less than 1 µA in active low-power mode. At a data output rate of 1.6 Hz, the operating current can be as low as 0.38 µA. For battery-powered multirotor drones, this virtually negligible power consumption can significantly extend flight time.
High precision and low noise ensure stable attitude: The LIS2DW12 supports user-selectable full-scale ranges of ±2g, ±4g, ±8g and ±16g, with an adjustable output data rate ranging from 1.6 Hz to 1,600 Hz. In low-power mode, noise is as low as 1.3 mg RMS, with a noise density as low as 90 µg/√Hz. This provides stable and precise acceleration data for drones in complex airflow environments, forming the basis for flight control algorithms to achieve smooth attitude control.
Extensive embedded functionality simplifies system design: The LIS2DW12 features a built-in 32-level FIFO buffer, reducing the need for frequent intervention by the main control chip. Its dedicated internal engine supports free-fall detection, wake-up functions, highly configurable single/double-tap recognition, stationary/motion detection, longitudinal/lateral detection, and 6D/4D orientation detection. These features can be utilised for drone fall alarms, collision detection or intelligent sleep/wake-up functions, thereby enhancing the system’s level of intelligence.
Compact Size and High Reliability: The LIS2DW12 utilises a compact 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.7 mm LGA package, making it suitable for drone flight control boards with limited space. It also features shock resistance of up to 10,000 g, enabling it to effectively withstand vibrations and impacts during drone take-off, landing and flight.
Drone Application Scenarios: From Flight Control to Intelligent Sensing
The applications of the LIS2DW12 in the drone sector extend far beyond simple acceleration measurement:
Attitude Reference for Flight Control: As one of the core components of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), it provides real-time acceleration data to the flight controller for attitude calculation and motion state estimation.
Intelligent Power Management: Leveraging its ultra-low power consumption and motion-activated wake-up features, the drone can enter a low-power mode whilst in standby or hovering, waking the main system only when motion is detected, thereby achieving intelligent power saving.
Condition Monitoring and Safety: The free-fall detection function can be used for emergency protection in the event of an accidental drone crash (e.g. triggering a parachute or propeller lock); impact detection can be used to record abnormal collision events during flight.
