[SONY] Back-illuminated Time-of-Flight (ToF) Distance Image Sensors
1. Overview:
ToF (Time-of-Flight) distance image sensors project light generated by light sources such as lasers or LEDs onto an object and measure the distance to the object by detecting the time difference between the emission of the light and its reflection back to the sensor. They can not only capture images in the X and Y directions but also acquire information in the Z direction, thereby enabling perception of three-dimensional space.
2. Features:
The dToF method for long-range distance measurement and the high-speed, high-resolution iToF method
Direct ToF (dToF)
- This method measures the time difference between the light emitted by the light source and the light detected after it has been reflected by the object. SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) technology may be utilised in the pixels. As this method can detect faint light, it is capable of measuring objects at long distances.
Indirect ToF (iToF)
- This method accumulates the charge generated by reflected light within each pixel and measures distance by detecting the phase difference relative to the time of emission. Utilising a conventional CMOS image sensor structure, this method enables the acquisition of high-resolution 3D images in a compact form factor.
