WiFi Chips — By Protocol Standard/Performance:
WiFi 4 (802.11n): Operates on the 2.4GHz band with a maximum speed of 600Mbps. It is gradually being phased out but still has demand for low-cost applications.
WiFi 5 (802.11ac): One of the mainstream standards, primarily operating on the 5GHz band (with some support for 2.4GHz), achieving a maximum theoretical speed of 6.9Gbps (with multiple antennas). It offers high cost-effectiveness and is widely adopted.
WiFi 6 (802.11ax): The current mainstream and fastest-growing standard. Operates on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, significantly improving efficiency, capacity, and power consumption (especially in multi-device environments), with a maximum theoretical speed of up to 9.6 Gbps.
WiFi 6E: An extension of WiFi 6, adding the 6GHz band to provide more clean channels, reduce interference, and achieve higher speeds and lower latency.
WiFi 7 (802.11be): The latest standard (commercially available starting in 2024), supporting 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz tri-band. It introduces new technologies such as 320MHz channels, 4096-QAM, and MLO (Multi-Link Operation), with a theoretical peak speed of up to 46Gbps and extremely low latency. It is currently in the market introduction phase.

 

WiFi chips — By Integration Level/Form Factor:
Stand-alone WiFi chips: Contain only WiFi functionality.
WiFi combo chips: The most common form, integrating WiFi and BT functionality into a single chip or module.
WiFi modules: Include a WiFi chip, RF front-end, antenna (or interface), necessary passive components, and even an MCU/SoC, provided in a modular form to simplify customer design. Suppliers typically also provide the chip.
