I. Isolated CAN
ADI’s isolated CAN transceivers integrate an iCoupler isolation unit and a CAN differential transceiver PHY; some models feature a built-in isoPower isolated DC-DC converter, achieving complete isolation between the MCU logic domain and the CAN bus side, in compliance with the ISO 11898 standard. The differential bus architecture offers excellent common-mode immunity, suppressing ground potential differences and surge voltages in industrial field environments and automotive power circuits, thereby protecting the main control chip from high-voltage damage. Supporting CAN 2.0A/B, these devices feature bus short-circuit protection, thermal shutdown and overvoltage protection, making them suitable for battery management systems, industrial fieldbus applications, humanoid robot chassis communication and automotive electronic control networks. The single-chip integrated solution significantly reduces the number of external components and simplifies PCB layout. Compared to optocouplers combined with discrete CAN chips, it offers lower power consumption, minimal timing drift and superior long-term reliability.
II. Isolated I²C
Isolated I²C products are specifically designed for bidirectional open-drain I²C/SMBus/PMBus buses. Typical models, such as the ADUM1250, support bidirectional clock and data line isolation, with a maximum communication rate of 1 MHz. They feature a built-in sink current capability of 30 mA and support hot-swapping of the bus. iCoupler technology is inherently suited to the bidirectional signal characteristics of I²C, requiring no additional direction control pins, thereby addressing the limitation of standard digital isolators that cannot directly isolate bidirectional open-drain signals. The isolated design breaks ground loops between different power domains and is commonly used in power monitoring modules, on-board sensor arrays, multi-board sensor interconnects within humanoid robots, medical monitoring front-ends and PoE power supply systems to enable register read/write operations and parameter configuration across power domains.
3. Isolated LVDS
ADI’s high-speed isolated LVDS devices are designed for high-speed differential serial links, with single-channel rates of up to 2.5 Gbps and a maximum bandwidth of 10 Gbps in multi-channel configurations, and are compatible with the TIA/EIA-644-A LVDS standard. The devices support point-to-point high-speed differential signal isolation, enabling isolated data transmission between processors, or between high-speed ADCs/image sensors and host controllers, thereby replacing costly fibre-optic link solutions. Featuring low jitter, low latency and high common-mode noise rejection, these devices are suitable for test and measurement instruments, high-speed image acquisition, isolated data transmission for humanoid robot vision boards, industrial high-speed cameras and radar front-end signal isolation. They ensure the integrity of high-speed image and sampling data in high-voltage and strong electromagnetic interference environments.
IV. Isolated SPI
As a synchronous full-duplex serial peripheral interface, ADI’s isolated SPI solution utilises multi-channel iCoupler digital isolators to provide flexible channel direction configuration. It supports independent isolation of clock, MOSI, MISO and chip select signals, and is compatible with peripherals such as high-speed ADCs, DACs, memory and encoders. Users can choose between versions with independent signal isolation or combine them with isoPower to achieve integrated signal and power isolation. These solutions support high-speed serial transmission at tens of Mbps, offer stable timing, and are free from issues associated with the ageing of optoelectronic components. They are widely used in industrial data acquisition cards, motor drive sampling circuits, humanoid robot joint actuators, energy storage BMS sampling units, and programmable logic front-ends to achieve electrical isolation between the main controller and the high-voltage analogue front-end, thereby preventing the MCU from being damaged by crosstalk from the high-voltage sampling side.
V. Isolated USB
The ADI isolated USB series complies with the USB 2.0 specification, supporting Low-Speed (1.5 Mbps), Full-Speed (12 Mbps) and High-Speed (480 Mbps) modes. Representative models include the ADUM3166 and ADUM4166, which offer different isolation ratings (3.75 kV RMS / 5.7 kV RMS). Some μModule isolation solutions integrate an isolated power supply, capable of delivering up to 2.5 W of isolated power. Isolated USB solutions break the ground loop between the PC host and the downstream device, eliminating common-mode interference introduced by USB cables, whilst meeting the safety isolation requirements for medical devices and test and measurement equipment. Typical applications include medical diagnostic equipment, data acquisition and recording systems, humanoid robot debugging interfaces, and industrial USB sensor modules. These solutions prevent equipment damage and data packet loss caused by ground potential differences, whilst simplifying EMC debugging.
VI. Isolated RS‑485
ADI’s isolated RS‑485 transceivers (such as the ADM2483) integrate iCoupler isolation and differential bus transceivers into a single chip. Some models feature a built-in isoPower isolated power supply, providing a complete single-chip isolation solution that is compatible with the ANSI EIA/TIA-485-A standard and supports multi-point half-duplex bus communication. Differential buses offer high immunity to interference, support multiple bus nodes and long transmission distances, and feature bus fault protection, short-circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown. The isolation layer separates the master control logic ground from the fieldbus ground, resolving ground loops caused by long-distance cabling. This is the mainstream isolated bus solution for industrial automation, building control, sensor networks and the networking of external long-range sensors for humanoid robots, and is suitable for multi-point data exchange in harsh EMI environments within factories.
VII. Isolated RS‑232
Isolated RS‑232 transceivers provide point-to-point serial isolation, electrically isolating the logic side from the RS‑232 level bus. This eliminates ground loops introduced by long serial cables and provides protection against common-mode surges and electrostatic discharge, with a maximum data rate of 1 Mbps. RS‑232 is suitable for short-distance point-to-point debugging and device interconnection; the isolated version is commonly used in industrial equipment debugging ports, medical equipment control consoles and test instrument serial ports to protect the main control circuitry and prevent damage to the motherboard caused by electrostatic discharge or high-voltage transients on the serial port side. Compared to non-isolated RS‑232 chips, ADI’s isolated solution offers high integration, simplifies peripheral protection circuits and reduces the cost of EMC compliance for the entire system.
VIII. Solution Overview and Key Advantages
ADI’s complete family of isolated interfaces is uniformly based on the iCoupler® air-core transformer isolation principle, eschewing the LED photoelectric conversion mechanism of optocouplers. Key advantages include: low power consumption, no component ageing, stable timing and long service life; when paired with the isoPower® isolated power supply, it provides a **single-chip solution for integrated signal and power isolation**, significantly simplifying hardware design; The products feature multiple levels of safety isolation, meeting the diverse safety standards of industrial, medical and automotive applications.
Seven major isolation interfaces cover low-speed control buses (I²C, RS232), medium-speed fieldbuses (CAN, RS485), high-speed peripherals (SPI), high-speed differential (LVDS) and general-purpose high-speed peripherals (USB). Engineers can flexibly select products based on transmission speed, topology, isolation withstand voltage and whether an isolated power supply is required, enabling one-stop design of multi-interface isolation systems. These are suitable for various systems requiring electrical isolation, such as humanoid robots, industrial automation, energy storage, medical equipment and test and measurement applications.
