Shenzhen Mingjiada Electronics Co., Ltd. supplies the Skyworks SMP1330 low-capacitance silicon PIN clamping diode, suitable for high-power clamping applications up to 6 GHz.
I. SMP1330 Product Overview
The Skyworks SMP1330 series comprises low-capacitance silicon PIN clamping diodes designed for RF receiver protection applications. Manufactured using PIN chip technology, they are designed as parallel passive clamping circuits, covering a frequency range from 10 MHz to 6 GHz. It is specifically designed to address the challenge of protecting RF front-ends against high-power signal surges, maintaining extremely low insertion loss during normal small-signal reception whilst rapidly conducting to limit the signal upon encountering high-power incident signals, thereby protecting sensitive RF components such as LNAs and mixers in the back end. It is widely used in broadband wireless communications, radar receive chains and industrial RF sensing systems.
II. Key Features of the SMP1330
1. Ultra-low junction capacitance design: Typical capacitance of 1.0 pF at zero bias, with low parasitic capacitance and excellent high-frequency impedance characteristics. This effectively reduces parasitic resonance and signal reflection in the 6 GHz band, ensuring broadband flatness without causing significant attenuation of small-signal reception.
2. High Power Handling and Fast Clamping Response: The 3 μm I-layer structure offers excellent power handling capability and short recovery times, enabling rapid clamping of sudden high-power pulse signals and suppression of clipping leakage power. Low distortion characteristics ensure the integrity of the received signal waveform, preventing the receiver from being damaged by strong signals.
3. Low insertion loss: Under small-signal conditions, the PIN diode exhibits a high-impedance state, resulting in low RF path loss and minimising the loss of receiver sensitivity, thereby balancing reception performance with protection capabilities.
4. SMT surface-mount packaging: Utilises a miniaturised plastic surface-mount package that complies with JEDEC MSL1 grade; it is a halogen-free, environmentally friendly component suitable for automated SMT production lines. With low parasitic inductance, it is easy to integrate into compact RF front-end PCB designs and is well-suited for the development of high-density RF boards.
5. High process consistency: Chip-level characterisation ensures strict control over device parameter dispersion, resulting in stable clipping thresholds and leakage power performance during mass production, which facilitates the mass debugging of receiver protection circuits.

III. Operating Principle of the SMP1330
The SMP1330 employs a parallel passive clipping architecture and operates without the need for external bias circuits. When the input RF signal power is low, the PIN diode remains in a zero-bias, high-impedance state, allowing the RF signal to pass almost unimpeded to the downstream receiver circuit; when a burst of high-power input signal exceeds the clipping threshold, the current generated by the RF signal’s self-rectification drives Layer I into the conductive state; the diode switches to a low-impedance state, bypassing the high-power signal to ground and clamping the output leakage power to a safe level, thereby providing passive protection for the receiver; once the high-power pulse ceases, the device rapidly returns to a high-impedance state, and the receiver resumes normal operation.
IV. Typical Application Scenarios for the SMP1330
- Front-end clamping protection for broadband wireless communication receivers operating at frequencies up to 6 GHz
- Protection of the receive channel in pulse radar transceiver modules
- Industrial RF detection and short-range, high-power RF sensing equipment
- Front-end protection for UAV RF communication modules
- Protection of RF input ports in test and measurement instruments
V. Summary of the SMP1330’s Advantages
In high-power RF clamping applications up to 6 GHz, the SMP1330 addresses the pain points of traditional PIN clamping diodes—namely, high high-frequency loss and limited bandwidth—by leveraging the combined advantages of low capacitance, low parasitic components and low insertion loss; Its passive operating mode simplifies RF circuit design, eliminating the need for an additional drive power supply, whilst its compact surface-mount package is well-suited to compact RF hardware, making it a cost-effective silicon PIN limiter diode of choice for protecting broadband RF receiver links.
