I. Digital and Analogue I/O (Smart I/O)
ADI’s digital and analogue I/O products include software-configurable I/O, digital input/output and analogue input/output. Designed for PLCs, remote I/O modules and field instruments, they address industrial field requirements for digital signal acquisition, analogue signal transmission, level conversion, bus protection and signal isolation.
Key Features
1. Software-configurable I/O architecture: Individual channels can be flexibly switched between digital input, digital output and analogue voltage/current acquisition, supporting the 4–20 mA industrial standard analogue loop. This significantly reduces the variety of components, increases I/O module density and simplifies the hardware BOM.
2. Integrated protection and isolation: Built-in ESD, overvoltage and short-circuit protection; can be combined with iCoupler digital isolation technology to achieve electrical isolation between the control side and the high-voltage field side, blocking ground loop interference and meeting industrial safety standards.
3. Signal serialisation capability: Multiple I/O signals can be serialised for transmission and interfaced with an MCU via buses such as SPI, reducing the number of controller pins occupied and making it suitable for high-density remote I/O unit designs.
4. Wide-range operating conditions: Supports industrial-grade temperature ranges and is resistant to common-mode interference, making it suitable for direct connection to sensors, solenoid valves and actuators.
Typical Applications
Industrial remote I/O modules, 4–20 mA process control transmitters, PLC expansion modules, field sensor signal acquisition, and signal acquisition and drive interfaces for humanoid robot joints.
II. Interface Transceivers
Transceivers integrate a driver and a receiver into a single unit, enabling bidirectional communication; they form the core of the bus physical layer. ADI covers mainstream bus protocols such as RS‑485/RS‑422, RS‑232, CAN, IO‑Link, A²B and Ethernet, comprising two main categories: standard transceivers and isolated transceivers.
Key Products and Highlights
1. RS‑485/RS‑422 Transceivers
Representative models: ADM3483, ADM2587E, ADM2565E. Available in half-duplex or full-duplex modes, the ADM2587E integrates an isoPower isolated power supply, achieving signal and power isolation on a single chip. The I/O pins feature ±15 kV ESD protection, with a maximum data rate of 16 Mbps and support for multi-point bus networking; models with controllable slew rate can reduce EMI, making them suitable for industrial communication over long cables.
2. IO-Link Transceivers
Representative models: MAX14827A; industrial sensor/actuator bus physical layer; supports 24 V field levels; small package and low power consumption; functions as an IO-Link device-side transceiver to enable bidirectional communication between smart sensors and the master station; serves as a key interface for on-site digitalisation in smart factories.
3. A²B Automotive Audio Bus Transceivers
A²B devices such as the AD2427 transmit multi-channel PCM audio, clock and synchronisation signals over a single pair of differential lines. They support daisy-chain topologies and feature low deterministic latency; they are widely used in in-vehicle cabin audio systems to reduce the weight of the vehicle’s wiring harness.
4. CAN, RS‑232 and Multi-Protocol Transceivers
Multi-protocol models support software-switchable RS‑232/RS‑485 protocols, with configurable half-duplex/full-duplex modes and terminating resistors; CAN transceivers meet the differential interference immunity requirements of automotive and industrial bus systems.
Key Advantages
Integrated bus protection and strong common-mode rejection; isolated transceivers eliminate the need for external isolation power supplies and isolation components, reducing PCB footprint; automotive-grade and industrial-grade versions support wide temperature ranges and are surge- and electrostatic discharge-resistant.
III. Interface Transmitters
Interface transmitters are unidirectional transmission devices that integrate only a line driver unit. They are responsible for converting digital signals from the controller into differential or single-ended bus signals for output; they do not include a receive path. They are used for unidirectional data transmission, clock distribution and drive output scenarios, and are often paired with standalone receivers. They can also be used for A²B, LVDS, differential clock and analogue output driving.
Key Features
1. Signal Drive Capability: Differential line drive with sufficient output current to drive long cables or multi-node loads, whilst controlling edge rates and suppressing EMI radiation.
2. Optional Level Conversion and Isolation Versions: Certain models feature iCoupler isolation, which isolates low-voltage signals from the MCU side before driving the fieldbus; the isolation rating can reach up to 5.7 kVrms.
3. Deterministic timing: Low jitter and low offset, suitable for audio buses, high-speed differential clocks and synchronisation signal outputs, such as the A²B bus master node transmit channel and industrial synchronisation trigger signal outputs.
4. Simplified system design: In unidirectional link scenarios, the use of a standalone transmitter reduces costs by eliminating the need for a receiver circuit, making it suitable for unidirectional control command transmission and signal broadcasting.
Typical Applications
A²B bus master node signal transmission, LVDS differential signal output, industrial synchronous trigger signal driving, instrumentation analogue output driving, and in-vehicle unidirectional control signal transmission.
