I. AC/DC Power and Energy Measurement Devices

Power and energy measurement devices are specialised data conversion front-ends, incorporating high-precision Δ-Σ ADCs, programmable gain amplifiers and hardware computation engines. They support real-time measurement of voltage, current, active/reactive power, cumulative energy, power factor and frequency in both AC and DC systems, significantly reducing the computational load on the main control MCU.

Representative models include the MCP39F511 single-phase power monitoring IC, the MCP3912/MCP3913/MCP3914 multi-channel metering AFEs, and the PAC series DC power and energy monitoring chips: PAC1934, PAC1811 and PAC1711.

The MCP39F511 integrates a dual-channel Δ-Σ ADC, a 16-bit hardware calculation engine and EEPROM, with a built-in low-drift voltage reference and a temperature drift as low as 10 ppm/°C. It can directly output RMS voltage and current, cumulative energy and power factor, whilst its I²C interface facilitates system integration; it is suitable for smart sockets, power distribution units, single-phase electricity meters and industrial power monitoring. The MCP391X series of multi-channel analogue front-ends features a high signal-to-noise ratio and sampling rates of up to 125 ksps. Designed for three-phase electricity meters and multi-circuit industrial energy consumption monitoring, it handles only signal conversion, whilst the energy calculation algorithms are performed by the host controller, offering greater design flexibility.

The PAC series specialises in DC power and energy monitoring. The PAC1934 is a four-channel energy monitoring chip featuring an integrated current sense amplifier and a 16-bit ADC. It automatically performs power calculations and energy integration via hardware, with integration periods ranging from milliseconds to tens of hours. It supports real-time calibration to compensate for offset and gain errors, making it suitable for power consumption monitoring in server power rails, lithium-ion battery packs and USB PD devices; The PAC1811 is a single-channel high-voltage power monitor supporting bus voltages up to 42 V. It features low quiescent current and provides power-limit alarm outputs, making it suitable for power supply protection and fault diagnosis.

Application scenarios: smart electricity meters, industrial power distribution cabinets, server power consumption data acquisition, battery BMS, charging point power monitoring, and power consumption testing of portable devices.

II. Digital Potentiometers

Microchip’s digital potentiometers (DigiPot) are programmable resistive digital-to-analogue conversion devices. Through I²C, SPI or simple up/down serial interfaces, digital commands adjust the internal tap position to achieve software-programmable resistance and voltage division ratios. They replace traditional mechanical potentiometers, offering no mechanical wear, power-on memory support and ease of remote calibration.

Product resolutions range from 6-bit, 7-bit, 8-bit to 10-bit, with options from single-channel to four-channel configurations; full-scale resistance values include 2.1 kΩ, 5 kΩ, 10 kΩ, 50 kΩ and 100 kΩ; They are divided into two categories: **volatile** and **non-volatile (with built-in EEPROM)**. Non-volatile models automatically load the previously saved tap position upon power-up, support the WiperLock tap-locking function to prevent accidental parameter overwriting, and have a static current consumption as low as 5 μA.

Main models: MCP4021–MCP4024 (6-bit, simple U/D interface), MCP4161 (8-bit, single-channel SPI), MCP444X/MCP464X (7-bit, I²C, multi-channel non-volatile) . The devices support two operating modes: rheostat mode and voltage-divider potentiometer mode, with rail-to-rail signal processing. Packaging options include SOT-23, SOIC, MSOP and QFN, meeting the requirements of miniaturised equipment.

Application scenarios: digital calibration of sensor gain, operational amplifier bias adjustment, LED dimming, fine-tuning of power supply feedback loops, automotive sensor calibration, digital control of audio volume, and calibration of industrial analogue circuits.

III. Voltage References

Voltage references are core precision components in data acquisition chains, providing stable, low-drift standard reference potentials for ADCs, DACs and power measurement front-ends. They are divided into two main categories: series and shunt types, covering industrial-grade and automotive-grade specifications, with an operating temperature range of –40°C to 125°C.

The MCP1501 and MCP1502 are high-precision series-type voltage references with fixed outputs ranging from 1.024 V to 5 V. The MCP1502 features a temperature drift as low as 7 ppm/°C, an initial accuracy of up to 0.1 per cent, low quiescent current, and sufficient drive capability to support multi-channel ADCs; The MCP1525 and MCP1541 provide standard outputs of 2.5 V and 4.096 V, respectively, making them suitable for general-purpose data acquisition systems; parallel-type reference sources such as the LM4040 and LM4041, which exhibit characteristics similar to Zener diodes, are suitable for wide-voltage-input, low-current applications and offer significant cost advantages.

Key advantages: low temperature drift, low initial error and low output noise; some models feature optimised thermal hysteresis to counteract reference drift caused by temperature cycling; automotive-grade certified versions meet stringent environmental requirements and are used for in-vehicle signal acquisition. The accuracy of the voltage reference directly determines the overall measurement accuracy of ADC and power measurement systems. Some Microchip power metering ICs incorporate an integrated voltage reference, simplifying the peripheral circuitry, whilst external high-precision references can also be connected to further enhance system accuracy.

Application scenarios: ADC/DAC reference sources, smart meters, portable measuring instruments, industrial transmitters, battery monitoring, and automotive signal acquisition.
