I. Lighting Drivers and Controllers
Lighting drivers and controllers are specialised power devices developed by NXP to meet the requirements for intelligent and stable LED lighting. They are primarily suited to applications such as high-brightness LEDs, automotive lighting, industrial ambient lighting and smart home lighting, addressing the pain points of traditional lighting drivers—including high power consumption, poor dimming accuracy, insufficient stability and a lack of fault protection. They are divided into two main product families: voltage-switching and constant-current drivers.
In terms of core technology and performance, NXP’s lighting drivers employ a differentiated thermal management design. Voltage-switching drivers transfer core heat dissipation to an external series resistor, minimising thermal stress on the device itself. This enables stable driving of LED arrays with multiple series connections and varying forward voltage drops, making them suitable for a wide range of lighting loads. Furthermore, the products incorporate high-precision dimming control modules, supporting both PWM fine-tuning and analogue dimming modes. With a wide dimming range and flicker-free operation, they meet the lighting adjustment requirements of high-end lighting applications.
The flagship ASLxxxx series of automotive LED drivers sets the industry benchmark as an integrated solution customised specifically for automotive lighting scenarios, suitable for vehicle lighting systems such as headlights, tail lights, daytime running lights and interior ambient lighting. This product series demonstrates exceptional adaptability to the automotive environment, withstanding complex operating conditions such as wide temperature ranges, voltage fluctuations and electromagnetic interference. It also incorporates comprehensive protection mechanisms against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent and overheating, significantly enhancing the operational stability and service life of automotive lighting systems. Furthermore, the series supports a modular design, allowing flexible adaptation to different vehicle lighting architectures, whilst facilitating design reuse and rapid iteration, thereby effectively reducing R&D and mass production costs for automotive manufacturers.
Beyond automotive applications, NXP’s general-purpose lighting controllers are suitable for industrial lighting, smart home lighting and commercial landscape lighting. They support multi-channel independent drive capabilities, enabling functions such as zoned lighting control, smart delayed switching and fault self-diagnosis alarms, thereby meeting the automation and precision control requirements of modern smart lighting systems.
II. Motor and Solenoid Driver
Motor and solenoid valve drivers are core products within NXP’s industrial and automotive power control portfolio. They encompass dedicated driver ICs for brushed DC motors, brushless DC motors (BLDC) and permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), as well as dedicated solenoid valve controllers. These products are characterised by high power density, precise closed-loop control, functional safety and robust environmental adaptability, and are widely used in industrial automation equipment, automotive actuators, intelligent robots and home appliance power systems.
The motor driver product portfolio is comprehensive, covering the full voltage range from low voltage to medium and high voltage. Among these, the MC33887 monolithic H-bridge brushed DC motor driver supports a wide input voltage range of 5–28 V, a rated current of 5 A and high-frequency operation at 10 kHz. It integrates internal control logic, a charge pump, gate drivers and low-on-resistance MOSFETs, and features built-in load current feedback to enable high-precision closed-loop motor control, making it particularly well-suited for small industrial control equipment and compact automotive actuator motors. For 48V high-voltage power applications, the MC33937 three-phase FET pre-driver is specifically designed for BLDC and PMSM motors in 48V battery systems. Featuring high power density and efficient drive performance, it serves as a core drive component for light electric vehicles, industrial servo robots and high-end automation equipment.
In the field of high-end industrial drives, the GD3000 and GD3100 series gate drivers deliver outstanding performance. The GD3100 isolated gate driver, in particular, incorporates a reinforced isolation design and supports the driving of silicon carbide (SiC) power modules. It features comprehensive functional safety diagnostics and real-time system monitoring capabilities, enabling predictive maintenance and fault early warning, making it suitable for high-reliability applications such as high-end industrial inverters and servo control systems. Furthermore, NXP’s motor drivers are equipped with comprehensive communication interfaces, enabling seamless integration with the main control MCU. They support multi-channel output configurations, balancing control flexibility with system scalability.
Solenoid valve drivers are designed for the precise on/off control and constant-power driving of various electromagnetic actuators. Optimised for the load characteristics of industrial solenoid valves, automotive hydraulic solenoid valves and pneumatic control valves, they feature surge protection, anti-mis-triggering and precise current stabilisation functions. These capabilities effectively prevent issues such as solenoid valve jamming, chattering and burnout, making them suitable for high-precision actuation applications such as industrial fluid control, automotive chassis control systems and smart valve equipment.
3. Smart Switches
NXP’s smart switches are built on the company’s proprietary SMARTMOS® mixed-signal process and represent a new generation of intelligent power distribution devices designed to replace traditional mechanical relays and discrete switches. They are categorised into three main types: high-side switches, low-side switches and configurable multi-channel switches. Designed specifically for automotive 12V/24V power supply systems and industrial 24V/32V power distribution systems, they enable intelligent, digitalised and secure control of power distribution.
Compared to traditional switching devices, the core advantages of NXP’s smart switches lie in intelligent protection and digital control. The products eliminate mechanical contact structures, resulting in no mechanical wear or arc interference, and boast a service life far exceeding that of traditional relays, making them suitable for high-frequency switching operations. At the same time, they integrate multiple protection mechanisms, including precise current limiting, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, overheat protection and reverse connection protection. They can monitor load current, operating voltage and device temperature in real time, and rapidly and autonomously disconnect the circuit in the event of abnormal conditions, thereby preventing load burnout and circuit faults.
In terms of intelligent control, this product series supports bus communication and coordination with a master controller, enabling remote on/off control, real-time feedback on load status and fault code reporting, thereby equipping power distribution nodes with autonomous sensing and intelligent response capabilities. Multi-channel, configurable models support independent control of multiple loads, with channel parameters that can be flexibly adjusted to suit scenarios involving multiple distributed power distribution circuits. Currently, they are widely used in automotive on-board power distribution, industrial equipment load start-stop control, smart home power distribution, and IoT terminal power control applications, significantly simplifying system peripheral circuits, reducing equipment size and power consumption, and enhancing system automation levels.
IV. Electronic Fuses (Smart eFuses)
NXP’s electronic fuses (smart eFuses) represent a new generation of intelligent power distribution protection devices. They revolutionise the traditional passive fuse-blowing protection model by integrating power distribution switching, intelligent protection, status diagnostics and energy consumption management into a single unit. As core protection components for high-end automotive and industrial power architectures, they offer key advantages including reusability, precise protection, intelligent diagnostics and low power consumption.
Core products, such as the XS48100 four-channel smart eFuse, are specifically designed for 48V automotive power distribution systems. They integrate a high-side power switch, a high-precision current sensing unit, an I²t harness protection algorithm and an ultra-low-power sleep mode. Compared with traditional fuses, its greatest advantage lies in its resettable nature: following a fault-induced disconnection, the device can be automatically or manually reset once the fault has been diagnosed, eliminating the need to replace components and significantly reducing equipment maintenance costs. It also supports precise threshold configuration, allowing for customised overcurrent, overload and short-circuit protection thresholds to be set for different loads, thereby addressing the issues of low protection accuracy, poor adaptability, and susceptibility to false tripping or failure associated with traditional fuses.
In terms of functional expansion, NXP’s smart eFuse features real-time power consumption monitoring, load status diagnostics and fault logging and reporting capabilities. It enables local fault diagnosis and rapid response at power distribution nodes without relying on a main control chip, thereby enhancing protection response speed.
