I. High-Side Switches: The Guardian of Power Supply Safety
NXP’s high-side switches are positioned as the “control hub between the power supply and the load”. Installed between the positive terminal of the power supply and the load, they directly control the power supply to the load, serving as the first line of defence in the power circuits of various devices. Their core advantages lie in their high level of integration and comprehensive protection functions, which effectively prevent faults such as load short-circuits and overloads from impacting the power supply system. They also feature precise diagnostic and control capabilities, making them widely used in scenarios with extremely high reliability requirements, such as automotive and industrial equipment.
In terms of technical specifications, NXP’s high-side switches utilise an eXtreme switch device design, covering multiple voltage ratings including 12V (automotive applications), 24V (bus/truck applications) and 32V (industrial applications). With on-resistance ranging from 2 mΩ to 50 mΩ and support for flexible configurations of 1 to 5 channels, they achieve a balance between low power consumption and high efficiency. The products integrate multiple protection mechanisms, including overcurrent, over-temperature, overvoltage, undervoltage and reverse battery protection. Certain models also feature programmable dynamic overcurrent protection thresholds and automatic retry functionality for over-temperature protection, significantly enhancing system stability. In terms of control, the products support an SPI communication interface (with daisy-chain functionality available on certain models), enabling precise programming, parameter configuration and fault diagnosis. They are also compatible with both 3.3V and 5.0V logic levels, facilitating integration into existing application systems.
Representative product series include the 12XS2 (12V multi-purpose low-on-resistance switch), 12XS6 (multi-channel switch for automotive exterior lighting), 24XS4 (24V multi-purpose switch) and 32XSG (industrial 32V SPI-controlled smart switch). Typical applications include body control modules (BCM), engine control units (ECU), vehicle lighting control and DC motor drives in the automotive sector, as well as low-voltage lighting, actuator control and relay/fuse replacement in the industrial sector. These solutions can significantly reduce the number of system components, simplify circuit design and cut costs. Furthermore, the NX5P2924 series high-side switches are specifically designed for portable battery-powered devices. Operating within a voltage range of 0.8V to 5.5V, they offer a continuous current handling capacity of 2.5A, with extremely low on-resistance and ground current, effectively extending the battery life of the device. They are widely used in consumer electronics such as mobile phones and digital cameras.

II. Low-Side Switches: High-Efficiency Controllers for the Load Side
In contrast to high-side switches, NXP’s low-side switches are installed between the load and ground, controlling the load by switching the ground path on and off. Their core advantages lie in their strong drive capability, fast response times and cost-effectiveness, making them an ideal control solution for both resistive and inductive loads, particularly suited to applications such as automotive engine control.
In terms of technical characteristics, low-side switches also rely on SMARTMOS® technology and employ a multi-channel open-drain MOSFET output design, enabling low on-resistance and low power consumption, thereby effectively reducing energy loss during device operation. The products incorporate comprehensive load and IC protection mechanisms, providing all-round protection against critical parameters such as overcurrent, overheating, and overvoltage/undervoltage, thus preventing device damage caused by load faults. Control methods are flexible and diverse, with certain models supporting SPI control, parallel input control, and PWM control functions to meet the dynamic control requirements of different loads. For example, the MC33882 model features six outputs and supports SPI and parallel input control, whilst the MC33999 model supports 16 outputs and dual SPI and PWM control.
NXP’s low-side switch portfolio is extensive, encompassing multiple models such as the MC33800 (engine control IC), MC33810 (automotive engine control IC), MC33812 (multi-function ignition and fuel injection driver), and MC33882, covering a range of channel counts and functional requirements. Application scenarios primarily focus on diesel and petrol engine management, ignition systems and fuel injection control within the automotive sector; they can also be used for small motor drives and solenoid valve control in industrial equipment. Thanks to their high reliability and compatibility, they have become one of the core control components in automotive powertrain systems.
III. Configurable Switches: Flexible, Customisable Solutions
NXP’s configurable switches represent the most flexible category among the three product types, positioned as an ‘intelligent control hub adaptable to multiple scenarios’. Through software programming or hardware configuration, parameters such as the number of channels, output current and control methods can be flexibly adjusted. This enables adaptation to different loads and application scenarios without modifying the hardware circuitry, significantly enhancing design efficiency and reducing development costs.
In terms of technical features, configurable switches support multi-channel output (up to 8 or 16 channels for certain models) and deliver a load drive capability of up to 2.0A via SPI control, making them suitable for a wide range of power management applications. Some models feature hardware selection pins and enable functions, allowing for signal multiplexing; for example, the P3S0200GM model, functioning as an I3C switch, supports 2:1 or 1:2 multiplexing. The wide bandwidth (typically 52 MHz) ensures low attenuation and low distortion during high-speed signal transmission, whilst the wide supply voltage range (2.3 V to 3.6 V) and excellent ESD protection make them suitable for high-speed signal switching applications such as communications and servers. Furthermore, configurable switches typically feature low-power modes; for instance, the P3S0200GM consumes a maximum of just 2μA when OE is high, effectively reducing overall system power consumption.
Representative products include the P3S0200GM (I3C configurable switch), MC33882 (6-channel configurable output switch) and MC33996 (16-channel SPI-controlled configurable switch), covering applications across multiple sectors such as communications, servers, automotive and industrial. Specifically, the P3S0200GM is suitable for devices requiring high-speed I3C signal switching, such as servers, workstations and laptops; multi-channel configurable switches are widely used in automotive body control, power distribution and load control for industrial automation equipment. Output channels and control modes can be flexibly configured according to actual requirements, enabling ‘one device to suit multiple scenarios’, significantly shortening product development cycles and enhancing the flexibility and scalability of system design.
