Device Description

The TRS3221EIDBR is a single-driver, single-receiver RS-232 solution powered from a single VCC supply, with IEC G1000-4-2 ESD protection on the RS-232 pins. The device is TIA/EIA-232-F compliant and provides an electrical interface between the asynchronous communications controller and the serial port connector. A charge pump and four small external capacitors support a single 3V to 5.5V supply. The devices operate at data signal rates up to 250kbit/s and driver output slew rates up to 30V/µs.

Flexible power management control options are available when the serial port is inactive. Automatic power-down is enabled when FORCEON is low and FORCEOFF is high. In this mode of operation, the device disables the driver output if it does not sense a valid RS-232 signal at the receiver input. If FORCEOFF is set low and EN is high, both the driver and receiver are turned off and the supply current is reduced to 1µ A. Disconnecting the serial port or turning off the peripheral drivers can cause an auto power-down condition to occur. Auto power-off can be disabled when both FORCEON and FORCEOFF are high.

With auto power-down enabled, the device is automatically activated when a valid signal is applied to the receiver input. the INVALID output informs the user if an RS-232 signal is present at the receiver input. INVALID is high (valid data) if the receiver input voltage is greater than 2.7V or less than -2.7V, or is between -0.3V and 0.3V for less than 30µs. If the receiver input voltage is between -0.3V and 0.3V for more than 30µs, INVALID is low (invalid data). Refer to Figure 7-5 for information on the receiver input level.
